Small Knife EDC

Picture
Knife Blog

I love knives. I just do. Knives are the only thing differentiating us from animals. (ok, knives and shoelaces). Let me put it out there immediately that I am not a knife expert, I consider myself a aficionado and frequent user.
As a maintenance technician, my knife is the tool I use most every day. I mean, I can’t use it to fix a toilet, but to open the packaging of the repair parts, for, sure. Opening things, breaking down boxes, the occasional screw here and there…useful.
I also tend to use it when I’m restless, like a grown-up fidget spinner. If I’m sitting in meeting or having online training, I FIDGET. And I usually fidget with a little pocket knife.  So I judge a  knife on a few criteria, one of them is fidget.

The knives I like are small. A knife that is too large pokes you in the hip when you are bending over or squatting down.
My ideal knife for the EDC is 3 inches closed, 5-5.5 inch open. Any smaller tends to be a little too small.  I do like my TRUE knife at 4”, with a 1.5” blade, but it tends to flip over out of my pocket on it’s clip.

My Favorite EDC
I think my favorite knife is my small BUCK “Bones” knife. It has a tonto blade, which I find to be a bit more useful than other shapes, though aesthetically, I really like a good “clip point” knife. The Buck Bones is 3” folded which clips nicely into a pocket and stays out of the way until you need it.  The 2” blade suits all my usual functions, and can be easily opened and closed with one hand.

My favorite “fidget” knife:

I love this BOKER “Magnum” that I bought at
THE KNIFE THE KNIFE CENTER. The Damascus steel blade is really lovely and keeps its edge quite nicely, and its etched bolster and cap make it pleasant to look at open or closed.
It has a very solid feel and is nice for a good fidget.
Drawback is that it is a 2-hand open and close.

Latest Addition:

This fidget from (I’m embarrassed to say…) TEMU.
I went on a TEMU shopping spree and bought like 5 small knives.  They are so cheap that ya feel like you can just buy whatever you see.  One time though, I bought a knife and all that arrived was an empty box! Anyway, a lot of the knives are actually drop-shipped right from the maker, so if you are careful you can actually get a really good knife right from the manufacturer.

All the knives I bought were all of decent quality, the 2 bottom ones were a bit too small. The fat one is too big to carry comfortably and is a little hard to open, as the thumb hole is too close to the pivot.

The top one is very nice and has a good feel, solid with a beautifully shaped blade; a very good fidget. It has a nice point and a good opening flip.
It's a little larger than I like, at 3.5" closed and 6"open,
I wouldn’t recommend it though because it closes too easily. I feel like I’ve already had some close calls when using it with it closing before I was ready.

That weird little Persian style blade in the middle I kinda like. It is a good size, 2.5" closed and 4 3/4" open,  has a good feel, and good density. The strange blade shape really gives it a good fidget.
It is a 2-handed open but a 1 hand close, and stays open until you’re ready for it to close.
The resin handle is nice, the knife is overall well made, and it was only like 6 bucks.
